Division Profile

The International Division has been running since 1985.The Division mandate is to provide a CSPG forum for members who are interested in learning more about the geology and hydrocarbon potential of countries other than Canada. This is achieved by holding regular technical presentations and social events. The technical presentations vary between offering detailed investigations of specific basins or hydrocarbon provinces to more general overviews of a particular country. The talks always aim to offer some general interest geology (including elements of sequence stratigraphy, basin formation, structural geology, etc.), general interest geography, and personal insights on the cultural aspects of other countries. Also included are thoughts on the philosophy and economic imperatives of doing business in foreign places.

Our meeting schedule is to have one informal brown-bag talk every month except during the summer. Talks normally start at 12:00 noon and finish at 1 pm. Each meeting consists of a 10-15 minute "Rock Shots" warm-up presentation followed by a 30-40 minute "Main Event" technical presentation. Currently, our meetings are held in the Nexen Plus 15 Conference Centre located in the Nexen Annex Building.

Involvement of our CSPG members is the key to the success of the Division. Individuals are encouraged to take part in all activities. Service companies, students and non-CSPG members are also encouraged to attend Division meetings. The Division Chairs are Robert Potter and Trent Rehill.

If you are interested in joining our mailing list and learning more about the International Division please contact Bob at (403) 863-9738 or ropotter@telusplanet.net or Trent at (403) 606-6717 or trehill@kulczykoil.ca. Or visit our Facebook page ("CSPG International Division").

Albania contains the largest onshore oil field in Europe, Patos Marinza (PMean OOIP 5.7 billion barrels) reservoired in Miocene and Pliocene sands and there are also several producing onshore carbonate oil fields in Albania including the Amonica, Visoka, Ballshi, Cakran and Gorisht fields (cumulative production to date of 200 MMbbl). This has been a prolific hydrocarbon producing area for many decades.

All of the hydrocarbons in onshore Albania are located in the Tertiary Albanide fold and thrust belt and its deformed foreland basin. The Miocene to Pliocene deformation of the fold and thrust belt affected the Triassic to Eocene carbonate platform, the Oligocene flysch and the Miocene to Pliocene molasse and developed from northeast to southwest. There are four distinct tectonic/stratigraphic provinces in Albania: the undeformed foreland basin offshore, the deformed clastic foreland basin of the Peri-adriatic depression, the outer Albanides of carbonate thrust sheets and the inner Albanides which includes ophiolites.

The Ionian basin deep-water carbonates of the outer Albanides, and the overlying foreland basin sandstones of the Miocene and Pliocene molasse of the Peri-adriatic depression are responsible for most of the hydrocarbon production in Albania. However, as this talk will illustrate, the platformal carbonate facies of the Kruja Zone in the thrust sheets to the northeast of the Ionian Zone also have hydrocarbon potential and contain abundant seeps that have been typed to the prolific source rocks in the Upper Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous sections that are responsible for the existing producing fields.

Petromanas holds 100% working interest in four onshore Blocks (Blocks A and B, Blocks D and E) and holds a 50% working interest in two onshore Blocks (Blocks 2 and 3) with Shell holding the other 50%. The blocks cover 1.436 million acres and have an extensive 2-D seismic database with over 1,400 km of recently acquired and/or reprocessed data. The mapping of this data set in combination with data from existing wells and the surface geology maps has led to a portfolio of large subthrust, anticlinal traps in highly fractured, massive carbonates of Cretaceous to Eocene age. The portfolio also includes the Shpiragu prospect which is a light oil discovery (37° API) within Block 2 drilled by Oxy. Examples of these prospects will be discussed during the presentation.

BIOGRAPHY

Mark Cooper graduated with a B.Sc. geology degree from Imperial College, London in 1974 and with a Ph.D. from Bristol University in 1977. He taught geology at University College Cork prior to joining BP in 1985 to work on structurally complex basins based in London. Mark moved to BP Canada, Calgary in 1988 where he worked on exploration in the foothills including the successful Sukunka-Bullmoose gas play in NE British Columbia. Mark also worked for BP in Colombia on the team that drilled the discovery wells on the Cupiagua, Volcanera and Florena Fields. In 1994 he joined PanCanadian and worked on the BC foothills, western Newfoundland, Quebec, the Gulf of Mexico, the Scotian Shelf and various international projects. He worked on frontier and international projects in Oman, Qatar, Yemen, Eastern Europe and Greenland after the merger that created EnCana in 2002 managing the Middle East and Global New Ventures groups for EnCana. Mark retired from EnCana as VP Middle East and Global New Ventures at the end of 2007 and now has his own consulting practice specializing in International Exploration and Structural Geology. Mark also holds an Honorary Chair in Petroleum Geology at the University of Aberdeen. He has published over 50 papers, co-edited a book on Inversion Tectonics and has served as an advisory editor for the Journal of the Geological Society. He was a co-winner of the CSPG Link Award in 1997, served as an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer for 1999-2000 and was a co-winner of the AAPG Matson Award in 2002. Mark has been heavily involved with both the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists and the AAPG serving on committees in both organizations over the last 10 years.

Marian Warren completed a bachelor’s degree in geology and astronomy/physics at Williams College, Massachusetts, followed by a stint as an instructor and astronomical observatory technician at Williams. She then chose to pursue geology as a career, completing a M.S. in geology (Appalachian structural geology and tectonics) at the University of Vermont, and a PhD in geology (Canadian Cordilleran tectonics) with Ray Price at Queen’s University, Canada. Marian joined EnCana Corporation (then PanCanadian Petroleum) in Calgary in 1997, where she held roles as geologist, geophysical interpreter and structural specialist. Her focus was on exploration in clastic and carbonate exploration plays in structurally complex settings, with projects in the Quebec Appalachians, the Alberta foreland basin and foothills, the central African rift system in Chad, and in the French Aquitaine Basin and Pyrenees foothills. She has also been involved in developing and presenting numerous technical training courses and field trips for EnCana technical staff, the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, Nautilus Geoscience Training Alliance and other organizations. Marian was a co-recipient of the CSPG Medal of Merit in 2003, winner of the AAPG Matson (Best Paper) Award in 2004, and served as an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer in 2006-2007, in the category of Case Studies in exploration. Since 2008, Marian has been the sole owner of Jenner GeoConsulting Inc. in Calgary, Canada, with consulting services focused in structural geology, frontier basin exploration and professional training. Clients and projects for Jenner GeoCOnsulting Inc. have been located in North and South America, Europe, the U.K., Africa and SE Asia.
