Field Trip

Glacial Geology and Climate Change in the Banff Area

The purpose of this trip is to give the participant an appreciation of how climate change has contributed to the marvelous landscape that we enjoy today in the Canadian Rocky Mountains. We will focus on the Quaternary glacial history by viewing a variety of glacial and post-glacial deposits, and erosional features that were deposited and formed during the last glaciation (Late Wisconsin), the Little Ice Age (Holocene), and the last few years. These include till, glacial outwash, lateral and end moraines, eskers, drumlins, river diversions, U-shaped valleys, and landslide deposits. This, hopefully, will equip the viewer to see beyond the scenery and to appreciate the temporal and spatial evolution of Earth landforms brought about by dynamic processes controlled primarily by climate change.

Space on this one-day Field Trip is limited to 30 participants – please register early to reserve your space! Cost of $300 includes one night accommodation (Oct 22) at the Banff Centre as well as all meals and course materials
