Teach Your Course
Why teach your courses through the CSPG Education Committee?
Introduction

The CSPG Education committee, revived in May 2003, has the goal to design and, when necessary, offer educational events that help the professional development of its membership. The Education Committee does this by developing education curricula designed for professional members in various stages of their technical career (junior, intermediate, senior, and expert).
The committee believes that general skills courses, already offered by many individuals, institutions and commercial ventures are an important part of such a curriculum however, we will not provide courses in this area unless existing course instructors wish to align themselves with the CSPG.
Courses dealing specifically with Canada are an important part of the curriculum, examples include: the application of sedimentological models in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, reservoir geology of the specific formations, structural geology of the Rocky Mountains, etc. Since it is costly and often impractical for commercial ventures and their instructors to focus on up-to-date detailed local case histories, the Education committee feels offering such courses is an important niche that can benefit the CSPG membership.
The Education Committee realizes that instructors offering such 'local content' courses require considerable expertise and considerable effort in their course preparation. The cost of this effort cannot really be recovered elsewhere in the world market.
Many instructors are tempted to work on their own, however, there are significant advantages for instructors to teach through the CSPG Education Committee; especially with the increased liability due to recent world events. Large companies are now requiring assessment and mitigation of all risks before allowing their staff to participate in field courses.
We recognize that in the past the CSPG has done a poor job of supporting educational courses and instructors and are working hard to ensure the CSPG will become a provider of choice for both instructors and those attending courses.
This memo outlines in point form some of the advantages for instructors to present their courses through the CSPG Education Committee.
