Andrew D. Baillie

Andrew Dollar Baillie

Andrew Dollar "Andy" Baillie (1912-2001) had a geological career that spanned 5 decades. His petroleum career began with the British American Oil Company (the precursor to Gulf Canada) in 1953. After retiring from Gulf, Andy spent more than 20 years pursuing his passion for teaching geology in a variety of guises. His combination of technical skills and a keen sense of the need to continuously educate made him an invaluable asset to the geological community.

Capping off a lifetime of geological involvement the CSPG awarded Andrew Baillie its most prestigious Stanley Slipper Gold Medal in 1997 for "life-long accomplishments and outstanding contributions to petroleum geology in Canada and abroad." He was an inspiration to the literally hundreds of geologists who came under his influence, however fleetingly, during his life.

Andy was an active member of the CSPG and had a particular interest in the CSPG Trust. In 1991, the CSPG established the eponymous Andrew D. Baillie Award for student presentations at the CSPG annual conference. A $1000 monetary award and a commemorative trophy are presented annually for the Best Student Oral and the Best Student Poster Presentations. This Award rewards excellence in technical presentations by students and hopes to encourage a level of technical prowess worthy of Andrew Baillie.
