Summer Employment Opportunity for Geology / Geophysics Student
The Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre is seeking a geology/geophysics student to work in the Geoscience Centre between approximately May 5 and August 31, 2008. The candidate must have completed at least three years towards a BSc degree in geoscience.
The Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre moved into the new Canmore Civic Centre in June 2004. The geoscience aspect of the Museum was initiated in June 1998.
The key tasks are as follows:
- design, update and produce displays which demonstrate the world class geology of the Bow Valley and local Rocky Mountain area,
- explain this fascinating geology of the Bow Valley to visitors,
- present geoscience outreach programs to grades 3 and 7 students,
- enhance and further develop the current "Stones and Bones" program and direct the program. The Stones and Bones summer camp program is intended to introduce 10 - 12 year olds to geology. Each camp is one week long on alternate weeks in July and August. It is intended to have 3 camps during this period.
- run 2-hour "I Dig Rocks" and "Rock On" geoscience sessions for 6 - 10 year olds and the general public.
The position is funded by Talisman Energy Inc., the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG), the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG), Canadian Association of Geophysical Contractors (CAGC), the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA), and CGGVeritas. We continue to look for sponsors. The position is intended to be full-time although it could be part-time for some of the period and full-time during the Stones and Bones program, if necessary. We will consider some flexibility in order to attract the best person with the given funding.
