Volunteer Profiles
Astrid Arts
My involvement with the CSPG began with the Conventions. I started out small, first on a subcommittee and then, a couple of years later, became the Special Events Chair for the 2001 Convention. Being the chair gave me the opportunity to meet and listen (as did those who attended the luncheon) to Harrison Schmitt – Apollo 17 Astronaut, the 12th/last man and only Geologist to go to the moon. After having seen the HBO series 'From Earth to the Moon' and thinking he'd be a 'cool' guy to have as a luncheon speaker, it was really something to have it all come together. That luncheon was definitely my volunteering highlight.
The 2002 convention was the CSPG Diamond Jubilee and with Gerry Reinson heading it up – how could I not be a part of it? Although I had to pull a bit of double duty (working on 2 conventions at once) it was well worth it. It feels good to know that I was a part of that special anniversary and better that I had a lot of good laughs along the way.
From there, I served on the board of the CSPG Trust and the Executive, and I am now the chair of the Electronic Communications Committee. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to meet so many remarkable people in our society. They are really what make it all worthwhile and as long as I am still having fun I will continue to make a hobby out of volunteering with the CSPG.
