Volunteer Profiles
Colin Yeo
Colin has been a member of the Society for over 30 years and during that time he has served on a variety of committees and the Executive. He is a firm believer in a volunteer-based and member directed organization.
The first committee Colin served on was Media and Public Affairs. At that time, the committee simply answered questions from radio, television and newspapers in a rather direct and reactive manner, which was much different than the proactive and comprehensive Public Relations Committee of today. Colin moved to an innovative but short-lived Society fund raising committee, called Art Event, in the mid-eighties. The committee encouraged local artists to create geologically themed works of art and submit them for auction to Society members and the general public. With the wind up of Art Event, Colin moved to the History and Archive Committee and worked with a local historian to begin the process of capturing and documenting the story of the CSPG. In 1995, Colin was the Chairman of the Core Conference for the Annual Convention and in 1999 began his two-year assignment as Services Director on the Society's Executive team. Currently, Colin is the secretary / treasurer of the Volunteer Management Committee.
Colin's current duties with the VMC involve matching members to volunteer positions by considering their skills, competencies and interests and ensuring they continue to enjoy their work on various committees. He also "tracks" members who retire from positions within the Society so that, after a rest, those members are not lost and can be given an opportunity to serve the Society again.
The CSPG has grown dramatically since Colin joined and is now a larger and more complex organization. Many duties that had been done by volunteers in the past are now executed by office staff in a more effective and efficient manner. There are, however, important roles for member volunteers to actively engage in leading and directing the Society on technical and strategic matters. Finding the right volunteer for the right committee is often a challenge but a good match produces powerful results. Colin is looking forward to making more of those matches in the future.
Colin Yeo is the CSPG President for 2007.
