Volunteer Committee Descriptions

University Outreach Committee

The CSPG University Outreach Committee was formed in 2002 to augment links between the CSPG and Canadian university earth science departments.  We aim to attract university students to the petroleum industry or related government and academic positions, and ultimately to encourage them to join the CSPG.

The University Outreach Committee is active in four main areas:

  1. University lecture tours – our goal is to schedule at least one lecture by a CSPG member at every Earth Science Department, every year;
  2. Participation in university conferences – the Western Inter-University Geological Conference (WIUGC) in western Canada, the Atlantic Universities Geological Conference (AUGC) on the East Coast, and the Advances in Earth Science Research Conference (AESRC) in Ontario;
  3. Promoting student membership – we are establishing student chapters of the CSPG at Earth Science departments across the country; and
  4. Corporate participation – we arrange donation of materials from companies to universities, and promote co-operation in research projects and other scientific activities.

Undergraduate Awards committee

The CSPG Undergraduate Awards committee consists of one appointed member. This committee hands out annual awards to deserving fourth year geology students who have demonstrated excellence in petroleum related subjects such as petroleum geology, stratigraphy, structural geology, etc. The awards consist of a certificate as well as a 100 dollar cheque to assist with the framing.

All geology departments from Canadian universities are invited to nominate one student for this award.

The primary responsibilities of this committee are as follows:

  1. E-mail/telephone all geology departments from Canadian universities confirm who is the contact for that academic year;
  2. Request one nomination from each geology department (Including student name and permanent address);
  3. Send reminders close to the deadline;
  4. Purchase supplies (envelopes, labels, etc);
  5. Print out an award certificate for each student;
  6. Request cheques from the CSPG office; and
  7. Mail award and cheque to each student.
