Course Objectives
This intermediate core workshop course aims to broaden the understanding of unconventional mudrocks with a particular reference to the Devonian Duvernay Formation. Lectures provide insights into mudrock/shale classifications, facies and stratigraphic descriptions, depositional processes and models, core and fluid analysis, Duvernay outcrop equivalents and mechanical stratigraphy. 

This course is aimed for intermediate experienced geologists with some understanding of the Duvernay formation.

Biography

Per Kent Pedersen received a Ph.D. (1999) in geology from Aarhus University, followed by positions with academia, government, and several oil and gas companies before he joined the University of Calgary as an associate professor in 2008. His research interests include geologic reservoir characterization from pore to basin scale of unconventional clastic reservoirs integrating core, well logs, outcrops, and seismic data.

Raphael Wust received his PhD in Geology in 2001 from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. From 2002 to 2009 he was a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Marine Geology/Sedimentology at the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, James Cook University in Townsville, Australia. In 2009, Raphael Wust joined the service industry as a Technical Advisor in Calgary (AGAT Laboratories, former Trican Geological Solutions). He is author and co-author of over 50 scientific papers. His professional interests include sedimentology, unconventional oil/gas plays, organic geochemistry, marine geology, and modern and past sedimentary environments. Since August 2018, he is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Geoscience Department of the University of Calgary.
